Event Recap: Microservices Meetup with Henning Schwentner at Testifi

Feb 27, 2025

An evening of deep insights, engaging discussions, and practical strategies for tackling legacy monoliths.

A Full House for Microservices Insights in Munich

Earlier this week, TESTIFI had the opportunity and pleasure to host the Microservices Meetup featuring Henning Schwentner at our Munich office. The event was in high demand, quickly booking out on meetup.com, and welcomed around 50 participants eager to learn and connect over one of the most pressing challenges in software architecture today: transforming legacy monoliths.

Our office at Charles-de-Gaulle-Straße 2 buzzed with conversations about domain-driven transformation, microservices, and strategies to reintegrate architecture into systems that have grown into unwieldy structures over time.

Key Highlights of the Event

🎤 Henning Schwentner: Domain-Driven Transformation

The evening’s main attraction was Henning Schwentner, author of “Domain-Driven Transformation”, who shared his expertise on how to bring (back) architecture to legacy monoliths. His talk, conducted in English, covered:

  • 🏗 Understanding the Starting Point: Emphasising that every legacy system is unique and requires a tailored approach.

  • 🔄 Catalogue of Refactorings: Henning presented practical refactorings to address common legacy system issues, including Big Ball of Mud (BBOM) architectures, anaemic domain models, and inefficient team structures.

  • 🧭 Heuristics for Choosing the Right Path: Participants learned how to select appropriate strategies based on system-specific challenges.

Henning’s insights resonated with the audience, offering not just theoretical knowledge but actionable techniques that can be applied in real-world projects. His passion for high-quality programming and sustainable architectures shone through, making the session both informative and inspiring.

Engaging Discussions and Networking

The evening wasn’t just about the talk. With good food and drinks—pizza and refreshments enjoyed by all—there was ample time for informal discussions and networking. Attendees had the chance to:

  • 🤝 Connect with industry peers who share similar challenges in modernising legacy systems.

  • 💡 Exchange experiences on implementing microservices and domain-driven design.

  • 🗣️ Discuss practical applications of Henning’s insights in various industry contexts.

We were also joined by notable guests, including David Leitner, Christian Deger, Benjamin Brachert, and Markus Fröhlich, whose contributions added further depth to the discussions.

A Successful Evening at TESTIFI

With a full house of around 50 attendees, engaging content, and vibrant conversations, the Microservices Meetup was a resounding success. For TESTIFI, it was an excellent opportunity to contribute to the software engineering community by providing a space for learning, collaboration, and connection.

Closing Thoughts

Events like this highlight the importance of community, collaboration, and continuous learning in the tech industry. TESTIFI is proud to have hosted such an insightful meetup, and we look forward to more opportunities to bring together experts and enthusiasts passionate about shaping the future of software architecture.
